WINTER - NEVER A BETTER TIME TO CATCH ROACH.
Unlike many other species these silver beauties will feed in the coolest weather. But how should you go about targeting them? Here are five deadly tricks…
1. Choose the right depth
Avoid really deep water for roach. Often you will find them in between 8ft and 12ft of water on deep venues, but be prepared to find out where they want to feed. Sometimes, just shallowing up a couple of feet can be the difference between catching a fish every chuck in, and not getting a bite.

2. Fish Light!
More than any other species, light lines, light floats and small hooks will get you more bites when it comes to roach fishing. Scale everything down, and reap the rewards with some big slimy redfins.
3. Keep Feeding.
Roach are a shoal fish, and although they can be difficult to catch, they feed very aggressively. If you aren’t catching, keep ringing the dinner bell by trickling bait in little and often. If you can get them to compete for a regular, but small stream of bait then you are on to a winner.

4. Dot it Down.
The biggest roach will often give the shyest bites. Dot that bristle right down, or fish with the lightest tip you can get away with. Don’t let them mug you off by eating your bait without you seeing.
5. Get Quicker Bites - move!
When roach are feeding in your peg you can often incite a quick response by moving your bait. If a bite doesn’t come soon after your bait has settled, lift it out the water and lay it in again. Another deadly trick is to slowly drag the bait, or lift your float out of the water a couple of inches then drop it down.
